Scientific Name: Tabebuia serratifolia
Common Names: Bastard Lignum Vitae, Ironwood, Lapacho
Market Availability: Available from quality hardwood speciality distributors.  
Properties: Ipe is a strong, dense and heavy wood. The wood has a moderate blunting effect on cutting edges. Surface preparation is required for gluing. This is one of the few woods that is heavier than water and will sink.
Grows: South America and Caribbean
Color: Heartwood is generally olive-brown, but can be darker. The grain is straight to very irregular with fine to medium texture.

Health Considerations: The yellow dust can cause skin and eye irritation. May also cause shortness of breath, Headache and visual disturbance.
